Instacart membership: What to know, fees, benefits and more
Instacart saves you time by delivering your groceries to your doorstep — with a membership you can get them without delivery fees.

Customers have the option of signing up for a free or paid membership, which we’ll explain in further detail below.
Instacart+ is Instacart’s paid monthly subscription membership, formerly known as Instacart Express. Plans costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year and with one, you get more exclusive benefits that those with free memberships don’t receive, such as unlimited free delivery on orders of at least $35, 5% credit back (with some restrictions), a Peacock Premium subscription and the choice to create a shared family account. Some financial institutions, like Mastercard and Chase, have special offers where you can redeem an Instacart+ membership for a certain time period for free.
A free Instacart account allows you to use the app and order as usual, but you’ll still have to pay the typical delivery fees, including if you’d like your orders delivered within a faster window.
Whether or not you could financially benefit from an Instacart+ membership is personal. If you have a large family, then you likely have to buy large amounts of groceries and other items often. On the flip side, however, if you only buy groceries for you, for example, it’s especially important to be aware of potential pitfalls. “You can end up adding items to your cart that you don’t need just for the free delivery,” says Hindert. “You also need to tip every time your groceries are delivered and that can add up quickly.” Since Instacart+ requires you to spend at least $35 for an order to qualify for free delivery, if you only want a few items, for example, you can easily spend an extra $10 on something you don’t actually need for the sake of getting free delivery.
Both Hindert and Gagarin agree that, depending on your situation and how frequently you use the service, having an Instacart membership is worth it. “Saving money using grocery delivery services is largely dependent on how much your time is worth,” says Gagarin. “Buying groceries online can save a lot of time, which many people may find valuable.” In other words, using Instacart+ regularly could be more beneficial from a time and convenience standpoint rather than a financial standpoint.
Instacart allows customers to purchase both grocery items from stores (produce, shelf-stable foods, deli, and fish counter items) as well as other products such as kitchen appliances and toiletries. You also have the option of ordering products in other categories, like beauty items from Sephora and even clothing and apparel. That said, as far as groceries go, if you do decide to use Instacart for only one of these categories, shelf-stable items may be the most worth it, says Gagarin. “I would recommend purchasing shelf stable items online and ideally selecting fresh produce [and] proteins in person to have more control over the quality of the ingredient selected,” she says.
While using Instacart on a regular basis presents several benefits, whether or not it actually helps you save money is subjective and depends on your personal situation. An Instacart+ membership gives you free delivery, but this may only be worth it depending on how often you drive to the grocery store, how much gas you use to do so and the gas prices in your city. You’ll still need to pay service fees and tip. Additionally, prices for some products on Instacart are marked up, which means they’re partially more expensive than what you’d pay in store. This may be fine for many people, especially if they don’t mind paying a bit extra for the sake of convenience. When shopping on Instacart, you also typically do not get many of the discounts or promotions you would if you were shopping in stores, which is something to keep in mind when considering a membership, says Hindert.
Hindert encourages customers to do a side-by-side comparison with prices at different stores to determine if there’s a considerable difference in the prices and whether or not it’s worth it to continue using the app, while also taking into account its other benefits, such as saving on time. “If [the difference in price] is nominal to you and you’d rather have time back to complete a deadline at work or take your kids to soccer practice, you have all the information to make what decision works best for you,” she says.
Financial aspects aside, however, using Instacart may provide convenience more than anything. The app does most of the time-consuming work when it comes to grocery shopping and it prevents you from spending more time than you need in the grocery store, where it’s easy to get sidetracked. “Using a grocery delivery service forces you to add items into your cart when you’re not enticed by pleasing smells in the overpriced cheese section,” says Hindert. “If you’re buying any specialty items, these apps also allow you to price shop what an item can run you at a different grocery store.” People who often overspend at the grocery store or those who often put off buying certain items in hopes of finding a cheaper version at a different location should definitely consider using Instacart, says Hindert.
This is known as a markup, and there are a couple different reasons you may notice that the prices for some groceries on Instacart are higher than what you’d find in stores. Companies, such as Instacart, markup the prices of groceries to cover business costs and profits, and they partner with grocery chains to determine agreed-up prices for certain items, according to Hindert.
Instacart offers digital-only gift cards for purchase through the app. You can buy and send a gift card to a friend or family member, who can then redeem it only via an Instacart membership. There are three different types of gift cards available to Instacart users: Instacart+ membership gift cards, corporate gift cards and Instacart gift cards. If you plan on sending a membership gift card to a friend, they can use it to redeem a three-, six- or 12-month plan. Corporate gift card orders allow employers to buy gift cards in bulk for coworkers, and standard Instacart gift cards allow you to send a dollar amount to someone, which they can use on the cost of groceries.
